Sole Revival: Giving New Life to R.M. Williams Boots
There’s something special about a well-worn pair of R.M. Williams boots. Crafted from a single piece of leather and made to last, they often carry stories as much as they do scuffs. Recently, a customer brought in a cherished pair that had seen years of service but was in need of a sole replacement. The upper leather was still in excellent shape – classic R.M. Williams resilience – but the soles had finally given out.
At Anand Shoes of Stamford, we specialize in high-quality boot and shoe repair, and as someone who has worked hands-on with hundreds of premium brands, I knew these boots had plenty of life left in them. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how I went about reviving this iconic pair.
The Assessment
The first step was a thorough inspection. The outsole was worn through at the heel and forefoot, and the midsole had started to soften – a common sign that a full sole replacement is due. The leather uppers, however, had aged beautifully and just needed a good clean and condition.
Removing the Worn Sole
R.M. Williams boots are traditionally Goodyear welted, which means they’re designed to be resoled – a blessing for both the environment and the wallet. I carefully removed the old sole, making sure to preserve the integrity of the welt and midsole. With boots like these, patience and precision are key.
Preparing the Base
After cleaning out the old cork filler and debris, I rebuilt the midsole where needed and added a fresh layer of cork filler – this gives the boot that signature comfort as it molds to the wearer’s foot over time. Once the base was leveled and smoothed, it was time for the new sole.
The Replacement Sole
For this pair, I fitted a premium rubber sole with a classic tread – ideal for both city wear and country walks. The new sole was stitched securely into the welt, then sealed and trimmed for a clean finish. I polished the edges and burnished them to match the original look of the boot.
Final Touches
Before handing the boots back, I cleaned, conditioned, and hand-polished the uppers to restore their luster. The result? A pair of boots that not only looked fantastic but were ready for many more miles.
